They stopped. The man who invented the process of spraying wet asbestos warned that because of the lack of the material the buildings would collapse if a large fire struck. He appears to have been correct. It wasn't the impact that collapsed the WTC towers, it was the weakening effect of the ensuing fires. I suspect that the buildings would have fallen eventually, but hours would probably have made a huge difference in the human toll. I'll bet the Empire State has full asbestos protection.
