The worst you can say is that the asbestos scare may have caused many to die unnecessarily.

You see, the building's steel infrastructure was sprayed with that, the best flame retardant, only up to the 64th floor when the asbestos scare hit in the early 1970's. They stopped.

The man who invented the process of spraying wet asbestos warned that because of the lack of the material the buildings would collapse if a large fire struck.

He appears to have been correct. It wasn't the impact that collapsed the WTC towers, it was the weakening effect of the ensuing fires. I suspect that the buildings would have fallen eventually, but hours would probably have made a huge difference in the human toll.

I'll bet the Empire State has full asbestos protection.
