In 1880 (when the wave of new Jewish settlements started) the population of Palestine west of the Jordan was about 200,000 of which about 20,000 were Jews. Jewish presence in Jerusalem was eliminated only during the Crusades. The crusaders are said to have killed everyone in the city when they captured it.
