>So far I come up with the terrorists and their sense of accomplishment in succeeding in terrorizing the US populace.
Despite all the patriotic hysteria going on, they have won unfortunately. We are all scared whether we like to admit it or not. We'll never again look up to see an airplane again and not think "will it come at me?".
>But I also see that the military industrial complex and the US security/intelligence agencies are about to get some teeth and major funding handed to them on a silver platter ASAP.
Bingo. These guys always win unfortunately. Until they are curtailed (to the tune of losses in millions of campaign contributions and a hit in the economy and loss of jobs/votes) we are kidding ourselves that we will leave in a peaceful world (which we sure do not promote around the world, on the contrary).
>Please reassure me they would never resort to such a horrific plan.
I was a bit encouraged that Bush did not come out blasting at the few remainining living goats in Afganistan. I was more encouraged to hear Powell keep mentioning the word "diplomatic" several times. I think there has been an intense debate in Washington D.C. between the hawks and the few ones who said "hmm, maybe we should change the way we conduct policy around the world". I think the hawks are clearly winning unfortunately:(
>Please tell me it stops with small civil wars, political assassinations, and drug and arms running. What are the chances?
None, except if Musaraff of Pakistan can deliver the goods to us and fairly quickly (see one of my prior posts about my theory behind this terrorist act) but he will exact a big prize (Kashmir probably). Here is a news item about that, the give and take between us and the Pakistanis has already started:

Pakistan: Unlikely to Use Military Outside Border
ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan on Saturday said it did not expect to take part in any international anti-terrorism operation outside its borders in the wake of the devastating attacks on New York and Washington.
``Pakistan does not expect to take part in military operations outside our border,'' Foreign Minister Abdul Sattar told a news conference. He said Pakistan would comply with all U.N. Security Council resolutions to combat terrorism.
Earlier this week Pakistan President Perves Musharraf volunteered ``full cooperation'' to Washington, but had not formally responded to specific U.S. requests to seal its border with Afghanistan (news - web sites), cut off fuel supplies, allow use of its airspace or share intelligence gathering.
On Saturday the Taliban warned Pakistan against cooperating with the U.S., threatening any neighbor with ``extraordinary danger'' if they helped Washington.
The U.S. has threatened retribution against those responsible for the attacks and those who harbor them. Osama bin Laden (news - web sites), implicated by Washington in the attacks, lives in Afghanistan as a ''guest'' of the Taliban. ------------ Of course that will not stop terrorism, I am afraid we 'll have to get used to it and that's sad. Here is an opportunity to rise above the same old crap and define our world for the better but our leaders don't have the balls to do it.
So, enjoy every day to the max! |
