It is true, there is a history. Still, there is something so overboard about this:

absent clear heat of the moment excuses that I found it, and the ensuing tone, rather offensive.

On the coyness matter: I accept your account of your meaning. Since you seem to me to have unfairly bashed religion in the past, I interpreted this in the light of those instances, and therefore took your disavowals as being coy. However, I would never flatly call you a liar when I cannot prove my case........
