Teresa, I disagree. I believe that they would have been accepted anyway.
The world's economy wasn't doing so well before all this happened, and because of this I think they would have been accepted. At any rate, whatever the real reason, accepting them IMO is a good idea for the long run, since hopefully as their country modernizes, their old leaders that were molded under circumstances from the distant past (pre ww2 I think) will die off from old age, and the newer leaders will hopefully be less rigid in their beliefs.
