Looking at the map, I was thinking that sooner or later, probably sooner, China will see the light:

The Chinese government is sitting on a lot of problems in that area of China, since most of the inhabitants there are not Chinese whatsoever, and may make an about face and support the efforts spearheaded by the U.S. Nothing like the threat of yet another "autonomous region" to turn up the heat - and the stakes.
