My suggestion is to have deputies who are licensed and of course trained
in the use of firearms travelling as marshals. Very likely business
people in their 30s, 40s and 50s who travel a lot on airplanes would be
the major source. These deputies would be unpaid, but highly
respectable members of society. They of course would need to be cleared
psychologically and by the police and follow all the existing rules
about safe storage of firearms. What percentage of society would this be
, perhaps 3% only. Then on any flight of 100 people there would
potentially be 3 gun carrying licensed passengers travelling on the
plane. Would people volunteer? Of course, Canadians and Americans volunteer for all
manner of things, coaching kid's sports, serving on boards of charities.
You could be of any age, I'm 59 and even I could be trained to handle a
weapon. Everybody would feel much safer knowing that there would be
armed trained random passengers to protect against high jackers and even
air rage.
You could of course extend this idea as these deputies wouldn't only be
travelling on planes, they would also randomly be on our city streets.
They could have powers of arrest if they see for example a car running a
red light or even a bank being held up. First things first, let's get
some on our airplanes.
This seems a simpler solution than removing all the knives from airport
restaurants or cuticle scissors or nail files from old ladies. That is a
gross overreaction. Who, after Tuesday, would take anybody seriously if
they said I've a nail file and I'm high jacking this plane. He'd be
jumped by the nearest male passengers in a jiffy.
