Yes, what a difference a day makes. A month ago, a week ago, had my children asked me what I thought of a stint or a career in the military I would have had the typical Boom Generation reaction of okay, sure, but why?
Not anymore. The entire nation is shifting its views and opinions and faster than we can realize. We will soon return (already have if you can believe today's sports reports) to sportsmanship at athletic contests, respect for police and firefighters, and respect approaching reverence to those in the military who risk their lives so we may pursue ours. My feeling is by the dawn of 2002 you will see an American culture closer to the one we had in the 1930s and 1940s than anything occurring since 1961.
My own feeling, and I've been making a list mentally, is that we're going to find a moral code again:
OUT:
Drugs, irony (Seinfeld), cultural relativism, political correctness, cynicism, Dan Rather, whining, generalized immorality.
IN:
Heroism, stoicism, profiling (especially at airports), respect for authority, abstinence, Brit Hume & Tony Snow, meaningfulness, values, morals.
Have you noticed Gunga Dan backpedaling like crazy from the Socialist Dan of just a few days ago to I'm-so-concerned-it's-giving-hemorrhoids. Would someone please just retire this weeny?
I just heard Al Hunt whine on TV that the Bush Administration was not fully briefing Congress on the situation, perhaps, he said they were concerned about leaks and, if so, they should just exclude those who caused concern.
Get a clue, Al. I think that's what they did. |
