"The better life", in other words. I have always thought that all people aspire to that, no matter who they are.
Unfortunately some people are stifled in that respect by their governments or their circumstances. I think that opening or helping to open the door for everyone to that better life has always basically what the Americans have tried to do. Maybe sometimes we went about it in the wrong way from some people's perspectives, but still, I think that's what we are all about.
We didn't stay in Germany as their conquerors, or France, or Japan, we helped win the war, helped them recover, and basically turned their countries back over to them. Sure we kept bases there, but I think it wasn't out of a desire to be conquerors, it had to do with the preservation or the attempt at preservation of peace. besides being a conqueror takes too much work and energy and we'd rather spend that effort on helping ourselves.
