Continental Slashes Jobs in Airline Crisis

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Continental Airlines Inc. (NYSE:CAL - news) said on Saturday it was laying off 12,000 staff and warned it may have to file for bankruptcy protection as the world's fifth-largest carrier and rival Northwest Airlines Corp. (NasdaqNM:NWAC - news) slashed flight schedules in the fallout from the air attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
