A Message for 2001 I Signed the Constitution Sites
Dear Theo,
When "We the People" established the United States Constitution, we endorsed the aspiration, so beautifully expressed in the Preamble, that our nation would "establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence...and secure the Blessings of Liberty." Two hundred and fourteen years later, the Framers' hopes are still our own, and their words are more meaningful than ever.
In light of the terrible and tragic attacks on September 11, this year's I Signed the Constitution program is especially important. It is one way that we can bring our communities together, and strongly reaffirm our commitment to the Constitution and all it represents.
We encourage you to find ways to help this year's event promote healing for your community. You might create a way for participants to talk and share their feelings about recent events, and how we should, as citizens, respond. You might let signers know that they are joining a national community, as others in all 50 states share this experience. Or you might encourage signers to silently reflect on the cost of our precious freedoms.
However you chose to respond to these developments, we are especially grateful for your support this year. We join with all Americans in extending our sympathy to families touched by this tragedy.
