Thanks, Mike. I find that the best way of discovering worthwhile books is asking what another history buff enjoys.

Michael Crichton has a novel, Timeline, that (mostly) takes place in 14th century feudal France- when it isn't taking place in 1999 New Mexico- it's Crichton, you know, with wormholes in the time space continuum, and other normal stuff. He includes lots of speculation on what knights really were like, and it's a great read. About as much fun as that French knight flick "The Visitors".
