Dome of the Rock

It is said that Mohommad did indeed visit Jerusalem. Jerusalem is known in Arabic as Al-Quds Al Sharif (the Noble Holy place) and Bayt al Maqdis (House of Holiness). Jerusalem was the first direction of prayer before Mecca. It is also to Jerusalem that the Prophet Mohammad made his miraculous journey from Mecca, Isra'. It was from Jerusalem that Prophet Mohammad ascended to Heaven, Mi'raj, from the stone now enclosed by the Dome of The Rock, after tethering his horse to the Western Wall. Today, Jerusalem’s two main mosques, one of which is Al-Aqsa (The Farthest Mosque) and which is referred to in the Quran, comprise the central features of the Haram al Sharif (Noble Sanctuary) and are the holiest sites in Islam after Mecca and Medina.
