Unpaid middle aged deputies would not work. You have to have soldier in peak of physical condition with lightning reactions. You don't want some old fogie dying of a heart attack or fumbling for his gun when a young trained terrorist reacts swiftly. Those terrorists were trained soldiers. They were drilled, psychologically indoctrinated and disciplined. No amateur is going to overcome them. They are ready for that. You need some one who eats nails for breakfast and can run ten miles with a 50 pound pack to take on three men with razors. And he had better have a practical and professional knowledge of self defense and a cold soul which will enable him to shoot through hostages to save the greater number. Few volunteer deputies are going to do that.

I wouldn't doubt that they had slashed up ten or 15 people by the time the planes crashed. They had to control a crowd of desperate people who knew they were going to die. They had figured the odds and knew their business. Only the most dedicated, quick reacting professional team would get by them. If you don't have a soldier who can hit a person once and kill them, and he knows it, you lose.

I have been in a few fights were I had to fight for my life facing weapons and bad odds. It ain't no joke. You gotta go for it with savagery. You gotta have oodles of confidence. Only stringent continual physical drill and peak physical condition will give you that.
