Of course, the sinister, Machiavellian view is that the sacrifice of 5,000 citizens is worth it, if we can have a wonderful adventure in the Arab world and gain a whole new dimension for the American empire. Could those in charge be that callous? I dunno. Ray, it's not the sinister view, it's the 19-century view of a 21st-century situation. For example, in the 1990's the Serbs thought the Germans backed Croatia to get "an outlet to the sea" in the south. The Croats thought the Russians backed the Serbs for the same reason. They were choking on 19th-century geopolitical views. The US has been involved in the Middle East for decades now, ever since the Brits and the French had to skedaddle. We don't need adventures (the days of romantic foreign adventures are over, and they were a lie and fabrication to begin with). Suggesting that any US administration would invite a tragedy on the scale of September 11 as a pretext for a foreign policy move tells me you have a lot more reading to do in your foreign policy education. That's not shooting the messenger, that's putting your remarks into context. You are way out of date indulging notions like that.
