In Add/Remove Programs, in Control Panel, select Windows Setup. Go through the Windows components you have on your system and remove what you don't use. (Stuff like Desktop themes gobble disk space by the megabyte.)
Even with software your use regularly, look for beginners' tutorials. These often have huge animated graphics which, if you've been using the software, you probably don't need.
Look at the size of WIN386.SWP and if it's huge, (most are) create a new one. First step, re-boot to DOS and erase WIN386.SWP, then re-boot to Windows. A new WIN386.SWP will be created, and it will be at a minimum size. This file will grow as you work. It it persists in getting too big too fast, override Windows swap file management and limit its growth.
Look for unused files. Good candidates are .LOG and .BAK files. (Get rid of SYSTEM.1ST) Also run ScanDisk, fix disk errors, and remove the error files ScanDisk creates.
