Peres thoughts mirror many of your own :

These terrorists must be rooted out and destroyed. But it must be done in a way that doesn't make us Osama bin Laden's chief recruiter. Because these Muslim terrorists did not just want to kill Americans. That is not the totality of their mission. These people think strategically. They also want to trigger the sort of massive U.S. retaliation that makes no distinction between them and other Muslims. That would be their ultimate victory — because they do see the world as a clash of civilizations, and they want every Muslim to see it that way as well and to join their jihad.

We must use every aspect of the arts of War here , besides
force , also a completely stepped up campaign of propaganda
of our own , to continue to try to win over the minds
of the more moderate in the world of Islam , that
should be one of our goals too.

The lack of any kind of retaliation or mistreatment
towards our own US Islamic citizens . It is a clash of
medieval culture of darkened thought and the modern
progressive mind and institutions . We cannot show that we
are as barbaric at home and as completely callous
as these fanatics ...trying to turn back the hands
of time for their little war-lord mentality.

It is a measure of the success of our culture for all to see
that supercedes this nihlistic world of the fanatic.
I agree with Peres , this is a War between medievalist
fundamentalism and all that humanity has learned and
garnered that is worth cherishing down
thru the centuries.

But we step unknowingly into this new
future ...unprecedented things may occur .
