Was it Hegel? I had it hanging on Herder. Does not matter. The idea of a nation-state is hopelessly outdated and, yes, inherently explosive (Kosovo, Bosna...). It should be a state of citizens - citoyens -. The openness - it's not (just) an economic category. In these time it should spiritual / value / extroverted openness. One could start first by dispelling - on US home turf - the idea that the west is endangered by islam per se. I wonder if this paranoia is not, at least partially, an update on the standard rasism? Nation of islam as seen by a [modernized/civilized/sanitized enough] version of Aryan nation?... Re Kaucasus: from the very first times that region was sort of a free-for-all outback ("Come to Kaukasus with 12 months hunting season") Very convenient, the different gods involved - makes it easy to go for boilerplate positions, paradigms and solutions. dj
