Hi Yaacov/thread, a bit of speculation for you:

I find it hard to believe that some of these terrorists spent so much time in western culture (e.g. years in the US or in German universities) without betraying their hate for it. We've also heard that some terrorists lived in the US with their wives/children. But as an anti-US fanatic, why would they want their families exposed to such evil?

So I wonder if maybe their motivation did not come entirely from religious/anti-American fervor, but was perhaps augmented by something else.

After all, we've heard reports from at least one terrorist's family that they had no clue that he was involved - that the last they knew he had received a "scholarship" in Florida.

I think their motivation was much more pragmatic than religious. My speculation is that given what may have been terrible living conditions for them back in the middle east, perhaps they accepted an offer from the terrorist bosses: perform such-and-such act, and we will provide $X to your family. Oh, and by the way, you'll end up in Paradise too (wink, wink).

If so, we should make sure that any such "obligation" is not honored, thereby ensuring that future suicide bombers won't be "bought" in this way.

Thoughts?
