Yes, we hid under the desks with eyes sheltered from the glass dozens of times. I have lived at locations that could be considered "ground zero" for almost 80% of my life, including my entire childhood. I never gave it a second thought. It never terrorized me. I saw no point.

As for "any sign of major escalation:" virtually anything the United States government does, from troops to intelligence gathering, official protests to coalition building will be viewed by someone as a "sign of major escalation."

Let's put this in context:

1) Our transportation system has been severely crippled for days if not weeks.

2) Our communications system was severely damaged for days.

3) Our financial system suffered grievous damage, the extent of which is as yet unknown.

4) Our economic system has suffered tremendous damage with long-term consequences. More immediate, normal business has been severely disrupted for a week now, resulting in billions of dollars of losses and, it appears, up to 100,000 jobs lost in the airline industry alone.

4) I am told that more Americans died on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, than have died on any single day as a result of war/terrorism in the entire history of the United States of America. (Prior to this, the largest single-day death toll was at Antietam during the Civil War).

I find it hard to assign almost any reasonable statement or response as contributing "major escalation."
