I heard the same comment on "The Capital Gang" and immediately cancelled my Starwood preferred membership. Here's the response that I received:

DEAR MR. XXXXXXXX:

Thank you for your recent e-mail message concerning your Starwood Preferred
Guest account. We welcome this opportunity to assist you.

We have received your e-mail message requesting that your Starwood Corporate
Preferred membership be canceled. We are sorry we may no longer serve your
frequent traveler needs. As requested, your Corporate Preferred membership
has been closed.

Please note that you may wish to change the status of your membership to our
Preferred Guest level. Preferred Guest members do not pay any annual fee and
receive two Starpoints for every eligible dollar spent. One stay per year at
a Starwood Hotel or Resort will keep a Preferred Guest membership active.

Please be assured that we would welcome the opportunity to once again
provide for your frequent traveler needs. If you have any questions or
concerns, please feel free to contact us.
