Re: On the importance of China

George,

May I suggest we pull back on the two topics below...
2. Our relationships with China
4. Our relationsips with the EU countries

I think that when we are operating within the Chinese sphere of influence (Asia and the SW Pacific), China becomes a critical factor in our calculations.

By my posts last night and earlier today, you should be able to get a sense of how important I consider the opinions coming out of China.

I think China will "play along" but all the while continue to blunt the further projection of American influence into Asia. The thing I worry most about is that China may take advantage of our deep military involvement to open a second front in the Taiwan Straits, say in about six months. On the other hand, I think they sense a deep change in our resolve but none of us know if that resolve has staying power.
