DJ No Confirmation Macau Arrests Linked To US Attacks

HONG KONG (Dow Jones)--Authorities in Macau declined to confirm Monday that a number of people arrested there Sunday are suspected of having ties to last week's terrorist attacks in the U.S. Koc Soi Leng, a Macau police spokeswoman, confirmed that some people were arrested during a raid, but said the people are believed to have been involved in a burglary case. She declined to give any details of the arrests or elaborate on the reason for the raid.

The South China Morning Post and other Hong Kong media reported Monday that five Pakistani men with suspected ties to last week's terrorist attacks in the U.S. were arrested in Macau. The police also seized documents carrying instructions for raids on U.S. targets in Hong Kong and Macau, the South China Morning Post reported.

The documents, seized from two suitcases, showed local targets would be attacked if the U.S. launched military action against Afghanistan, sources close to the investigation were quoted as saying by the Post.

The U.S. Consulate in Hong Kong is closed until further notice to assess its security, according to a recording on the consulate's telephone line.
