from the Washington Post:

"Nextel Communications Inc. registered what was probably record traffic as employees tried to mobilize the network to aid emergency services, while some employees checked up on their friends and family working at the Pentagon and the World Trade Center, said Audrey Schaefer, a spokeswoman for Nextel. In New York, Washington, and Boston—where two planes were hijacked—network traffic surged throughout the day, she said.

Although Nextel wasn't able to quantify the volume, "our network has been taxed," Schaefer said. "I cannot imagine a heavier time."

Nextel distributed approximately 1,000 of its phones to emergency workers Tuesday, and plans to distribute 5,000 more, Schaefer said."
