For example, Oracle reported what analysts said was a shocking 26% decline in its flagship database business for North America. James M. Pickrel, analyst with Chase H&Q, said the falloff was the result of both the slowing economy, as well as increased competition from Microsoft Corp. and International Business Machines Corp.

Oracle's other main business line -- application software, which companies use to monitor their operations -- was also off, declining by 6%, which was a smaller drop than many analysts had expected. Oracle's main application product line, called 11i, has been plagued with reports of bugs and slow sales, even while shipments by competitors have increased.
