As the days wear on, it appears as if only the British will really stand by us. The French, Norwegians, and now the Germans and Italians are balking. NATO consists of the US, and Britain. The rest are free loaders, it would seem.

I wish I could find the article, but the French PM or some such official gave an interview saying his government supports the US, but will not go blindly along with any military action. French **sovereignty** and all that. Read that again - French sovereignty takes precedence over NATO. And yet for 50 years, European security was founded on the principle that the United States would respond militarily to any attack on Europe, IRREGARDLESS of US interests and sovereignty. That was the cornerstone of NATO and Article Five - that the United States was willing to sacrifice New York to save Paris. And NOW, when Article Five is invoked for US interests, our dear European friends have only kind words for us, and little else.
