RE: "we have to prevent the exporting of these holy wars to our shores at all costs. Something is really wrong when a mid-east holy war is best waged on the buildings of an American city."

The "why" on America, certainly needs to be examined and addressed by scholars.

But very unfortunately, the "why" has to wait and it unfortunately cannot wait for the scholars to figure out the "why" to deliver a new foreign policy.

To strategically maintain the image of a super power that does not tolerate terrorism, a response needs to be reasonably immediate but with sufficient information so that it's not reactionary. I don't believe in revenge (and wish Bush & media would stop using this word), but I do believe in a strategy that maximizes overall global peace. Foreign countries were shaken up with the news - they want to know that the USA cannot be overtaken by terrorists because our ability to protect ourselves represents a level of their own safety. What we aren't safe from, they aren't safe from.

But I sincerely hope that the response is very careful to not cross certain lines that evoke war.

And, yes, I definitely agree that the "why" needs to be investigated.

Regards,
Amy J
