I don't think there was any winning for soviets in places like Afhanistan. There were no resources(natural, material or geographic) and the local dirtpoor,resentful population would just have kept sniping away(gun ships or not). Russia can't even handle Chechnya--which is a picnic compared to Afghiastan.
