How do I change a whole bunch of Read-only attributes (including subfolders) at once?

I regularly back up data to a CD and drag the backed up documents back to my computer. However, these documents and folders are all marked Read-only. Currently I am going through all of the folders, sub-folders, and files to take off the Read-only attributes but is there a DOS command like CHMOD that will go into a folder and mark everything as Read?

TIA
big
