I wouldn't say that Tenet deserves "the sack"...

After all, he's been a major player in trying to bring about peace between the Palestinians and Israelis, having personally traveled there to coordinate negotiations.

But this latest intelligence failure could just as well be a failure by the FBI to act upon such intelligence as received by the Israelis. The FBI has major responsibility for domestic counter-intelligence, not the CIA.

It's really tough to act upon information from someone, even the Mossad, who tells us that that we have a 200 person cell operating in the US who are about to launch a major attack on parts unknown.

There are so many targets available out there, and no one would have suspected a suicide attack using US airliners as a potential scenario.. It's was a brilliant stroke of "hitting us where we ain't looking"..

I can tell you that a week before this attack, there were subtle increases in security being taken at various federal offices. My wife picked up on it, but didn't know if there was anything specific related to it.
