The only libertarian society that actually worked was in medieval Iceland. It was really an anarchist society. It was a wonderful place until the Vikings came marauding. My understanding is that the people of medieval Iceland where Vikings (although they could still be raided by other groups of Vikings). The older Viking areas were becomeing more centralized Kingdoms and many people left not liking the idea of bowing down to the kings. When things really started to decline it wasn't raids but rather the climate turning colder. Tim
