I watched The History Channel last night as they broadcast footage from the ships that fought the Battle of the Philippine Seas. There were an enormous number of kamikaze planes thrown at the American fleet and the destroyer picket lines took very substantial casualties in defending the aircraft carriers that were the heart of the fleet. Of course, we also lost several carriers to those assaults as well.

That analogy to Japanese Kamikazes is decidedly imperfect since it presupposes that these terrorists will have resources equivalent to those of the Japanese nation when in fact their logistical base is more akin to one of the Communist party factions that worked as national liberation fronts to subvert our allies during the Cold War.

You may underestimate the severity of this conflict and the extent of the casualties we will sustain. Any realistic assessment of the large number of Arab national governments that were and are complicit in terrorist activity suggests that we may have to settle disputes with factions in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and even potentially Iran.

Unless, you suppose that we don't really mean to root out these groups and will settle for some face saving concessions from their national sponsors. With the potential devastation that even one nuclear weapon could wreak, I doubt that even complacent America will be willing to risk that consequence.

I look to Israel for the most relevant example of what costs we will sustain in defending ourselves from terrorist attacks. Their embattled example, while heroic, is not exactly the social environment that any of us would wish for kids.
