you have to take into account that we were all raised here under "no war never ever again". After two world wars many Germans got the message that violence will only create more violence.

It is really a problem that the US uses the term "war" right now. When THE superpower of the world has "America's new war" on CNN, which is watched all over the world, everybody here is just in FEAR. That the world could be led into complete destruction, by war or civil/religoius wars, by the force of an unleashed giant America where nobody can escape anymore. The fear is that our efforts for tolerance e.g. with the 3mln Turkish who live here and are absolutely innocent though they are Muslims may be rendered in vain because the levels of fear might just rise too high, so that violence will occure and cause more violence so that our country and the peace we love will be destroyed. Btw, the Allies were the ones who brought us that wonderful peace, so that it seems simply wrong for the vast majority here to give it up because of extremist terror that can be fought in many very appropriate ways different from gross destruction.

And of course, there has not been ANY statement from a German politician saying that we will not fulfill our Nato duties. But the Nato treaty does also say that moves will be DISCUSSED among Nato partners. I hope that the US will at least be able to understand the feelings of their good European friends and allies...
