[DSL and privacy]

The Ascend manager accurately described what a mess you can get when you configure your network incorrectly. E.g. use a DSL modem as a bridge to transmit your internal LAN traffic to the outside. If you connect your LAN to a DSL modem you will need a DSL router and Ascend will be happy to provide it to you. But the typical non routing DSL modem will not be connected to a LAN but to a computer. And in this case the computer will act as router and do the neccesary routing to keep your private LAN traffic private. It will be of course be a very good idea to control if the network setup of this computer is configured correctly. And if you absolutely want to prevent security leaks due to incorrect computer configuration the Ascend DSL router may indeed be the better idea. Now I finally understand how they can charge $1000 more then the competition with non routing DSL modems and still find customers. $1000 is a small price to pay to prevent potential security problems.
