The Viet Nam war is a very sore subject even today in the US. We can debate until doomsday whether it was winnable in theory, but in practice, there was no way. The rules the US operated under made it impossible to win. The enemy could go into other countries to escape, and we could not follow. We could not even try to conquer North Viet Nam. I don't think our military will engage under similar limitations again.
