I didn't say don't use nuke plants.

Good point on chemicals: silicon wafers use nanogram amounts of dopants, the production plants recycle the processing chemicals nowadays, and the rest of it is common and safe. The process is certainly safer than gasoline or fissionable materials.

The idea is to have more options, not fewer.

Maybe I've got an overabundance of confidence in technology, but looking back several decades seems to underscore our ability to produce what we want, once we've made a commitment and decided to execute.
