I do believe that the German's will help the US and fulfill their NATO duties. Even the Green Party , which is as anti-militaristic as you can imagine supports the US.
However, keep in mind that there won't be much enthusiasm in any European country about raging a "war" with diffuse goals and an invisible target. The European's will be cautious until Bush comes up with clear mission statement about what his goals are and what he wants to do.
The "war" against terrorism is not a war in the classical sense and lines like "no distinction between terrorists and countries that harbor them" do not help at all.
The goal of any retaliation must be to eliminate terrorists not thousands of civilists.
