you are quite right regarding the problems this situation poses. Shrub's harried face tells me he knows it too. luckily both China and Russia are no friends of the Kalashnikov toting hobby poet either (Bin Laden is known for regularly reading his own poems to his followers...presumably that stimulates their suicidal juices), because he has actually expanded his reach to well within their territories, supporting and training their local Muslim extremists.
nobody (on a government level) likes him but the Taliban ...even the president of Sudan is said to have changed his mind about him. so i suppose that the effort to hunt him down will be a great example of politics making for strange bed-fellows as they say. the various secret services have apparently already shared what information they have. but he's a slick customer and i expect him to put up quite a fight, unfortunately.
another aspect is that apparently the current plan includes the forceful eviction of Saddam, i.e., both Iraq AND Afghanistan are likely to be invaded in some form. Iraq for the propaganda value provided by easy victories, which will help deflect criticism of a possibly much more difficult operation in Afghanistan.
btw. , on my personal list of suspects, there's also the Shi'ite Hizbollah militia that operates in Southern Lebanon. purely from a 'willing and capable' PoV. that would implicate Iran, or rather radical elements within Iran.
one can only hope that recent rumors about UBL having acquired ABC weaponry from the caches of the former Soviet Union are wrong, otherwise the potential for escalation becomes even more horrifying.
