It may be simplified into that, an Israel-support issue, but it is a tad more complex. It is not possible for the US to withdraw support for Israel or The Saudis. It would lead to a collapse of the region and eventual war. Every faction would be at each other's throats to control the area and the oil. The history is complexed with the whole Suez, Israel, Amoco, Iraq, Sah of Iran, Saudi issue. Even with Israel out of the picture, there would still be war and anti-americanism in there. What does Pakistan have to do with the ME? They are different race and thousands of miles away. Yet many of the terrorists are trained in Pakistan. We helped the Afghanis get the Soviets out. Now they bite us, or so it seems. The Muslims fundamentalists hide behind the guise of religion. It is a great motivator. But they are after one thing. Temporal power. They want bigger harems, more land, more derricks, and more guns. Mohammed is invoked to get willing cannon fodder for their legions. It's the eastern equivalent of flag waving.
