Market Outlook
After the Storm
By:Adam Martin
Stocks are close to opening levels this afternoon as traders struggle with conflicting sentiment. On the one hand, analysts feel strongly that stocks are oversold. on the other hand, the aftermath of last weeks tragedy and its lasting impact are just beginning to be understood. Yesterday made the largest single day point decline for the DJIA, and although the selloff didn't have a chaotic tone, the implications of a 685 point drop are hard to ignore. Analysts feel trader sentiment is leaning more heavily towards recession as fears of continued fallout from last Tuesday's tragedy have traders continuing to pull back. Some sectors, particularly those involved in insurance and travel, were expected to suffer, but almost all sectors have shown substantial losses. A half point rate cut by the FOMC yesterday, while showing the government as willing to do its part to aid recovery, seemed to have little effect on yesterday's trading. Optimistic analysts still see a recovery in the near term, but now even more then before the terrorist attacks, traders remain hungry for good news.
