HP launches midrange Unix server a week after IBM

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept 18 (Reuters) - Printer and computer maker Hewlett-Packard Co.(HWP) introduced on Tuesday a mid-range server in a launch sandwiched between new offerings by competitors International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) and Sun Microsystems Inc.(SUNW).
HP's rp8400, which it calls the new workhorse of its line of network computers, can take up to 16 microprocessors, double the capacity of the company's current mid-range, and lists for $124,000 in the minimum configuration with two microprocessors, the company said.
The machine runs HP's version of the Unix operating system, HP-UX, on PA-RISC 8700 microchips, the newest version of the company's proprietary semiconductor series, and is aimed at companies that want to be able to expand without buying new servers.
HP said it will keep selling its 8-way, or 8-processor, midrange server, redubbed the rp7400, as well.
Competitors IBM and Sun both sell mid-range machines that can hold 16 or more microprocessors.
IBM introduced a new midrange server, the p660, about a week ago, while Sun is expected to announce next week a new high-end server based on its UltraSPARC III microprocessor. REUTERS
