Never, in the history of this country or any other, has such care been taken to avoid injury to civilians as it has in the last 30 years by the United States.

War is nasty business; the "military mindset" can hardly be considered at fault. War is nasty business. Our nation has, in fact, gone to great lengths to develop weaponry to conduct wars in the cleanest conceivable way.

How is it you can overlook this obvious extensive effort just to dis the military?

TGPTNDR, I never said that these atrocities occurred frequently. What I said originally is that the military will not let the potential of civilian deaths stand in the way of a military objective. For an example, we fired on a Sudanese hospital, killing innocent civilians in the process. Israelis missiles have killed innocent Palestinian civilians, even children, although they were not the intended targets. And the Afghans claim we killed innocent civilians when we sent missiles looking for bin Laden's headquarters.

In that vein, the perpetrators of last weeks killings see themselves as being at war with the US. The death of numerous civilians is just one consequence of that war. There are factions within every military component that could care less about civilian death tolls.

This attitude is somewhat understandable. Its very difficult to have a strong aversion to killing and still be "a mean fighting machine". Killing goes with the territory.
