Why Infospace acquired Locus by: frenchystephan (39/M/Canada) Long-Term Sentiment: Buy 09/18/01 04:08 pm Msg: 299275 of 299304 INSP was interested by Locus for 2 reasons: their VoiceXML platform for speech enabled web site and their Automatic Speech Recognition and Speaker Authentification technology. Locus was running out of cash and their investors decided to go ahead with the purchase of Infospace. I often considered Locus as the best kept secret on the market and because they are in Canada, their value always have been way lower than Nuance or Speechwork and their marketing was far from being as good as these 2 so .. they were not known well in the market. In fact, Locus, Nuance and Speechwork (previously Altech) were about the same size in employees in 1997!!. Locus will enable Infospace to differentiate their offering in the market and increase customer satisfaction when they use speech technology and portal/cell applications are hungry for that techno. Speech technology is not an exact science and work with probability and bench mark have shown the capabilities of Locus. Also, what is not known to market is that Infospace sold the speech enabled auto-attendant division of Locus last July which was not in their business focus and got some $$ back for it which was a good move! ******************* More postings from another board.
