Dear Tim:

AMD has a majority of the automotive flash business. In fact their product is preferred over Intel's due to speed, longevity and reliability. Ditto for the telcom market. Most products that can be used in a hot engine bay can be used in a military environment. As for aerospace, that market wants to be about 10 or more years behind for the fact of 10 years of history before they consider a new product and is not very profitable as these products are very mature. I suspect that Intel derives very little profit from "Mil-spec" business.

The automotive and telcom markets, even as depressed as the later are, are far bigger than that and contribute more to the bottom line. Many military applications are beginning to use "off the shelf" hardware as it usually is much better, more reliable and cheaper than the old "Mil-spec" route. The NASA "faster, better, cheaper" route is also to use standard "off the shelf" hardware as the "bang for the buck" is much larger. The later favors AMD currently. Even the lowest bidder philosophy of most government contracts hurts Intel now. Thus, this process will lead governments to get AMD based clusters as they are cheaper than an equivalently performing Intel ones. Price/performance rules in this market.

As to the broader "mil-spec", if Intel keeps building lower and lower spec'd parts, they may lose even that business. They have their fingers in too many segments as it is and it shows. The lack of concentration on their core business will lead to further trouble in the years ahead.

Pete
