OT: Bob:

When they are fed and have hope for the future,

I don't think bin Laden ever went hungry. If you look at the info on the hijackers, all of them seem to come from the wealthier Arab states. At least one was middle class and had attended a Western university. There is not one poor Afghan peasant or Taliban fighter among them, so far. This is not the product of poverty. Nor does this act help anybody to control people or land. In fact, it seems likely to cost the Taliban their control of Afghanistan. This was about hate.

(Even if it did have anything to do with poverty or oppression, the US is already working as hard as possible to combat those things. )

This is some Nazi, Orwellian nightmare.

Good point. Understanding why these terrorists hate the US so much is like trying to understand why the Nazis hated the Jews.

I don't know how large a part it plays, but I think the popularity of US culture in Arab countries may be a factor here. I think you underestimate the feelings that US popular culture arises in some corners of the world. The French described the opening of Euro-Disney near Paris as a "cultural Chernobyl". The Saudis ban US tourists and work hard to keep western culture out of their country. In no way is any of this America's fault. We don't have to apologize to anyone for our wealth and for the popularity of US culture in lands far from home. It is the French people who often choose American films over French ones. However, we should not be blind to the (unjustified) resentment that this can breed against America, in Europe and elsewhere.
