Amkor 'rounds out' Taiwan expansion with IC-test partnership By Semiconductor Business News Sep 19, 2001 (5:33 AM) URL: siliconstrategies.com
HSINCHU, Taiwan -- In a move to "round out" its expansion in Taiwan, U.S.-based Amkor Technology Inc. today announced an agreement to cooperate with King Yuan Electronics Co. Ltd., a 14-year-old independent semiconductor test services company based here.
The partnership comes several months after Amkor expanded its presence in Taiwan's chip-packaging and testing markets with the acquisitions of Taiwan Semiconductor Technology Corp. (TSTC) and Sampo Semiconductor Corp. (see June 20 story).
Amkor said its new agreement with King Yuan Electronics will provide additional test capabilities and capacities for Taiwan's semiconductor industry. The companies said they plan to share technology and business resources to provide customers with turnkey assembly and testing services. Terms of the agreement were not released.
"King Yuan offers Amkor a full range of test services, from test development to tape-and-reel packing," said Joe Holt, vice president of worldwide test services at Amkor. He added that the partnership will enable both companies to enhance their offerings and increase their "competitive advantages during the current market conditions."
The pact will help King Yuan Electronics to expand internationally while helping Amkor locally in Taiwan with a "win-win situation for both companies," said DF Lin, president of the Taiwan testing houses. King Yuan Electronics--also known as KYEC--is publicly traded in Taiwan and provides a range of test services for memory, logic, mixed-signal, RF, and other devices. The company said it has nearly 1.4 million square feet of space in its manufacturing and headquarters facilities. |
