Thanks Ken,

Great thread BTW.

I really doubt that Pakistan is a nuclear power, although the assumption that it is not is one we cannot afford to make.....

I personally think that it WANTS to appear as a nuclear state and so concocted up a demonstration to parallel Indian demonstration. As far as I remember, there seemed to be gaping holes in the conducting of said nuclear explosions exercise, holes picked up thru the satellites...

The reason I say this is becoz it is a govt which is totally broke. The public has more cash than the govt ever had or has. Nucear capability cannot be developed from scratch without a decent funding and support. And at the time it professed to have developed its nuclear program it was not on the hotlist of US allies, it was not the friend of USSR, its ties with China were pretty weak, and lets face it, its political history has been less than perfect, and the instability creates diversions.

Though I wouldn't be prepared to call Musharrif's bluff, it nevertheless is my belief that the nuclear program was more of a PR ploy than anything else.
