Terje -

The current Pentiums and especially the Pentium Pro have the necessary hardware hooks embedded in them to enable mutiprocessor operation.

Most of the big PC vendors (Dell, IBM, Compaq, ALR) are beginning to ship Pentium Pro servers with 4 CPUs which can take advantage of an operating system that supports mutiprocessing directly. Microsoft NT does precisely this.

So, this feature is here today, courtesy of Microsoft and Intel.

Pricing, however, may not fit the budget of most users who want a machine for their desktop.
