Thanks for the response gwn. The observations you responded to were used to support a position to "nuke them until they glowed" or something like that.

Glad to see you didn't agree with that. Regarding your points:

"we need to take out the parties responsible for the WTC"
I agree, and we will.

"It was the US that built up Iraq after the Iranian hostage crisis."

"It was the US that built up the Taliban against the USSR."

True on both counts, but at the time they looked like sensible strategies.

"Afterwards we need to get the hell out of these tribal disputes and stop giving them money"
I believe we need to work with the ones that support our anti-terrorism position (in words AND deeds) and help them get into the 21st century. Hopefully we can foster a mindset that all viewpoints and religions in the world are legit, as long as they don't teach to hate and kill a group with alternate views.

That said, I realize how difficult that will be and how long it will take. If a nation even thinks about supporting terrorism or not helping with the causes to make the world safe and fair, by all means we should yank any assistance we are giving them, and maybe even hit them militarily. We have a chance to do some good here for ourselves and for people of other lands that are subjected to criminals like the taliban.
