Cape Breton was beautiful. The leaves are just starting to turn. The golf was a great tonic for me. After a big whack of golf, if you are lucky, there is a shot that sticks with you; the highlight of a trip; the one moment when it all worked perfectly, just for a second or two as the ball takes flight and everything else falls away.

Against the backdrop of world events, I often thought of a poem I learned years ago:

My house is burned,
But the cherry tree in my garden
Scatters its blossoms
As if nothing had happened.
